Description of the macro-field of study

European Diplomacy is a macro-field of study which was established at the University of Wrocław in 2010. The studies consist of a 3-year undergraduate programme (BA) and a 2-year graduate programme (MA), within the scope of which a student can choose to specialize in the following areas: International Security, Political Culture and the Media, Foreign Policy. On both levels undergraduate and graduate full-time as well as part-time programmes are available. Courses are conducted in Willy Brandt’s German and European Study Centre (CSNE) and other places at the Faculty of Social Science of Wrocław University. The Centre’s cooperation with different units of the University allows the students to take advantage of all the facilities the University provides, including the CSNE library, which offers a great variety of resources needed for scientific research and teaching in CSNE: books, journals, special collections of volumes, as well as a plentiful supply of publications in English.

Our students are given the opportunity to acquire a wide range of knowledge in such fields as law, history, political science, sociology, economics and international relations. Our offer is enriched by courses devoted to cultural studies (including such topics as cross-cultural communication, identity issues, mutual perception of different nations, media functioning).

Within the programme of European Diplomacy, special attention is devoted to foreign languages learning.  Apart from obligatory English language courses, our students may choose to improve their German attending  an optional German course or hone their communication skills during one of the elective courses conducted in foreign languages (mainly in English).

Tutorials and lectures are run by highly-qualified academic staff from CSNE and lecturers from other units of the Faculty of Social Science. Moreover, we invite scientists from other countries to give guest lectures at our University.

The programme of studies abounds in opportunities to gain practical knowledge of the field during plentiful tutorials and discussion classes as well as during the obligatory summer internships. Additionally, our students can participate in conferences and have the possibility to study in other European countries as part of LPP Erasmus programme. They can also spend a period of time at the friendly University of Leipzig, which offers European Studies and Global Studies, fields of study with English as a language of tuition. Besides, we cooperate with the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Auswärtiges Amt (the German Department for Civil Affairs and Foreigners), which results in meetings with politicians, experts as well as foreign policy officers from Poland and abroad.  In 2011 we organized a series of meetings with Polish members of the European Parliament, whereas in 2012 we plan to organize a sequence of encounters with consuls and ambassadors posted to Poland. Such events undoubtedly allow the students to widen their range of knowledge and acquire some practical skills.

Every year, the chance to study within the undergraduate programme is given to approximately 50 applicants, while within the graduate programme – to about 80 candidates. The limited number of students creates favourable conditions for improving the quality of teaching.  Since the contact with tutors is more intense in small groups, teaching tends to be much more effective.

The programme is aimed at young, creative people, interested in work and their own development in Polish as well as European diplomatic service, civil service, non-governmental organizations, political consulting, cultural institutions promoting Polish culture abroad, in corporations and companies, as well as in the media interested in international affairs.
